Smoking – The Last Taboo

It is interesting how so many activities in our society (USA) are off-limits to criticism or comment. What once was common is now ostracized. Once there was a national prohibition against all forms of alcohol and wine and beer ads assault us daily from billboards, radio, television, and magazines. Large displays are devoted to the brand of the moment in most grocery stores. Sex is safe and everything is allowed except criticism or comment, likewise for professions (except for lawyers), gambling, and drugs.

But wait; there is a new taboo (well at least the most recent) that everyone can dump on with no fear of reprimand – smoking. An article in a respected newspaper, The Washington Post, recently commented on a teen age prostitute arrested for drug sales and the ultimate condemnation of her was when she lit a cigarette. Everything could be forgiven except that lone act that sealed her fate.

I smoke. I have done so for many years and intend to continue to do so. My doctor also smokes and she has no intention of quitting. Why? For the enjoyment of it. To my mind (warped as it may be) there is nothing more beautiful than an attractive woman smoking.
